Artist’s Statement
Inspired by the wildlife and landscapes I encounter while travelling I return to my studio full of experiences to be expressed in the work. Rather than faithfully documenting the flora and fauna, I strive to capture the feelings, insights and emotion these trips provide. Each trip consists of both a journey through the outer world, and an inner journey where I learn more about my humanity, spirit and the world inside. These paintings are about both worlds and how they relate.

Richly textured and developed using with many layers of alternately opaque and translucent layers, strong graphic composition and bold colors combine to set the stage for realistically rendered animals, objects and landscapes. These are integrated with abstract elements and expressive brushwork reflecting the inner emotive response. I continue working until a balance between both worlds is achieved and the painting comes alive.

Stylistically, my work is grounded in realism, inspired by the graphic and iconic images of painters such as N.C. Wyeth and the landscapes and cloudscapes of Maxfield Parrish. The atmospheric aesthetic of Russell Chatham and the Hudson River painters often finds it way in to my work. But my desire to express emotion and to explore our unseen inner world calls me to integrate the expressive colors, shapes and mark-making found in contemporary abstraction.
