ROSETTA - Though drawn to modeling in clay at a very young age, Rosetta's formal art training was in commercial art, culminating at the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles. Once established in a successful graphic design career, the urge to pursue her love of creating in three dimensions resurfaced and now she is sculpting full-time.
Her subjects are animals, another childhood passion. Stuffed animals took the place of dolls, and recurring nightmares of being stalked by big cats evolved into wonder-filled dreams of friendly encounters with them. Admiration and respect for the grace, power, and nobility of the wild ones is evident in Rosetta's sculptures, which capture their spirit, form, and movement in a unique hard-edged yet fluid style.
Rosetta has exhibited extensively both nationally and internationally, has completed corporate, public and private commissions and has received numerous awards for her work.
Artist Statement
The subject of my sculpture is the life force of the animal, in all its visual splendor. The point of my work is not to depict an animal as it appears in nature, simply as a reminder of something already known. The art is in the expression of a concept contained within the subject, uniquely presented to enhance one's experience.
It is important for me to maintain the integrity of the essence of the particular animal in the pose I've chosen for a sculpture, and then the challenge is to create individual component shapes that are pleasing in and of themselves, enhancing an integrated, flowing, visually stimulating overall form for the sculpture. While the abstracted forms and flowing lines might be considered the defining elements of my sculpture, the animal provides the structure from which those elements flow, and the soul from which the concepts of the sculpture derive their meaning.
My style has been described as hard-edged yet soft, sensitive yet powerful. I think this is possible because of the position I have chosen along the scale between abstraction and realism. At first glance, the silhouette of my sculpture will suggest realism because it is true to the essence and the spirit of the animal. Yet upon closer examination it is clear that it is the abstraction of forms that creates the art. Neither the abstract nor the real dominates. A perfect balance between them is the goal. |
